Charlie Wilsons War

Directed by Mike Nichols and written by Aaron Sorkin, the film casts Tom Hanks as the title politician, a Texas congressman who enjoys the high life in the early 1980s. He takes up the cause of Afghan rebels during the Soviet invasion, finding kindred spirits in a socialite (Julia Roberts) and a CIA operative (Philip Seymour Hoffman). (8 p.m., AMC)
